Seattle International Auto Show plugs in to electric vehicles

The Electric Highway highlights EV technology. Sponsored by Seattle International Auto Show

SEATTLE — Are you wondering if there's an electric vehicle in your future?

"Their time has definitely come," says auto expert Tom Voelk.

Welcome to the Seattle International Auto Show's Electric Highway, presented by Puget Sound Energy.

Voelk, a New York Times contributor and car reviewer, is also the owner of two electrified cars.

"They're just terrific."

The cars on display here represent a wide variety of what's on the market. But one thing they all have in common is increased range.

"200 miles of range, 250 miles of range," Voelk says. "Some, like Tesla, will get 300 miles of range. Most people don't drive more than 30 miles in a day. In a Chevy Bolt EV you could go all week without charging it up."

Plugging in is cheaper than filling up.

"It costs only a fraction of the cost that you would use at the gas station."

They're good for the planet.

"Here in the Pacific Northwest, we have renewable energy. A lot of wind, a lot of hydro, so our electricity is not only inexpensive, but it's relatively green, so this is the perfect place to have an electric car."

You won't spend as much time with your mechanic as you used to.

"There's a lot less moving parts so there's a lot less maintenance."

The electrified road ahead is wide open.

"If you talk to the manufacturers, almost every one of them says electrification is the future. Once people experience them they'll never go back to a gasoline-powered car."
