SEATTLE — It's a chance to sharpen their skills in the same places where some of Seattle's top chefs create their culinary masterpieces.

"A lot of students end up coming in here to eat and make that connection - 'Oh I cooked in that kitchen!'," said Junior Sous teacher Sarah Adams.

Today, Capitol Hill's Tavolata has turned into a Taqueria. They are hosting a Junior Sous class where the students get hands-on instruction from their teachers, Sarah Adams and Brianna Draper.

Sarah works at Tavolata as a Sous Chef. "It's nice to work in my own kitchen because I have my own tools."

Brianna works in a daycare.

It's the perfect pairing for a class like this and it's something they've been dreaming up since they were the same age as the kids they teach.

"In elementary school, we did cooking projects together so now as adults we're still doing it," said Brianna while laughing.

But they've learned precise measurements aren't the secret ingredient to making their classes a success.

"We really want to foster the creativity with the kids and not only teach them the skills and give them those ideas to create on their own," said Sarah.

It's meant to be a little challenging... and the lessons learned extend beyond the kitchen.

"Not just the very important skill of making your own food, but creating your community and involving your community with the food you make," said Sarah.

Developing a love for food and community - the perfect recipe to inspire the next generation of top Seattle chefs.

"Everyone is focused on going, going, going. But by taking the time to sit down and taste what you've made and talk about what you've made and your life is super important," said Brianna.

You can watch Junior Sous' cooking demos at the Bite of Seattle on Sunday, July 21st and at the Phinney Farmer's Market on Friday, July 26th and Friday, August 23rd.
