CHELAN, Wash. — It goes without saying that Campbell's Resort on Lake Chelan has the perfect location. There's eight acres of beautiful, waterfront property. But the resort's rich history is what makes this place really special.
"My great-great-grandfather moved here from Sioux City, Iowa back in the late 1800's and built the original hotel here in 1901," said Tom Campbell, President of the resort.
"It was on a sand dune. The seller was reported to say he sold a sand dune to a sucker."
While the landscape looks a lot different now, you don't have to look far to get a good glimpse of the past.
The original hotel building still stands, but is now home to the resort's restaurant and bar, which was where the original lobby was location. The bar top is even made with wood from the original exterior walls.
While the new walls tell the stories of the past through black and white photos, some of the Campbell's favorite stories are about the other families who have a history there.
"We've had some of our guests that have been coming here for 60 plus consecutive summers," said Tom. "So we get to know the grandparents, the parents, the kids, the grandkids."
Campbell's is located steps away from downtown Chelan, right on the lake.
Campbell's Resort is the 2018 winner for Best Resort in the 2018 Best Northwest Escapes contest sponsored by Washington's Playground.
