This Parkland drive-in gives new meaning to bussing tables

Eat your burgers in a warm, renovated vintage bus.

PARKLAND, Washington — At Lucky's Drive-In, Willow Eskridge serves up classic burgers the way her grandparents might have eaten them.

“We make our own patties and chop all our veggies fresh,” she says. “We get local bread that's fresh.”

The fries are old school and a strawberry milkshake is made with real strawberries.

“Lots of people love the shakes!” she says.

In the summertime, Lucky's is hopping with tourists stopping by on their way to Mount Rainier, but when the weather turned cold and rainy, the owner of Lucky’s Drive-In had to make her own luck.

“People like to be inside in the winter,” she says.

That's where a vintage 1955 King County Metro bus comes in.

“I saw this and I knew it was the one,” she says. “The lines are perfect. It’s gorgeous inside.”

Gorgeous but dirty. The bus didn’t have any seats either. With the help of a designer, Eskridge renovated the insides and made sure there was heating and piped-in music.

“It’s just a fun unique thing that isn’t anywhere else,” she says.

The bus has solved the weather conundrum, but Eskridge needed one more draw: a special that goes to the dogs.

“We give them free beef patties when you order one,” she says. “So you can eat, they can eat. Everybody's happy and then the dogs always want to come to Lucky's”.
