Ways to protect kids from germs at school

Twelve states reported cases of enterovirus as of September 8, 2014.

A serious respiratory illness known as Enterovirus has landed hundreds of children in hospitals across the nation. While it hasn't hit Washington, many parents are concerned about what their kids could pick up at school.

Enterovirus D68:

  • Schools are back in session and kids share germs
  • CDC investigating Enterovirus D68 in Kansas City and Chicago, along with 10 other states
  • This enterovirus causing severe disease & hospitalization

Enterovirus testing frustrating, doctor says

Upper Respiratory Illnesses:

  • Kids at risk because colds spread through close contact
  • More than 200 viruses cause common cold
  • Most viruses cause infection and kids get better on their own
  • This virus is hitting hard and early in season

What Parents Need To Know:

  • Handwashing: water ajd soap for 20 seconds
  • Staying home when unwell, common sense rules with school
  • No vaccine for this virus
