Buying a wedding dress from Brides for a Cause is a perfect marriage of saving money and giving back.
The non-profit bridal boutique – with locations in Portland, Tacoma, and now Seattle – donates most of its net proceeds to women-based charities.
"(The charities) give prom dresses to girls in need, beauty boxes to women who are going through chemo, professional clothing for women getting back into the workforce,” said manager Deana Berry. “We put on an event twice a year giving free dresses to women in the military and armed forces.”
Donations top half a million dollars, so far.
The bridal boutique also offers deep discounts to customers, because the gowns are samples or pre-owned. They’re delivered from locations all over the United States.
"We get a lot of really unique items that you don't usually see at the bridal boutiques around here,” Berry said. "The dresses that people bring in to donate are gorgeous, and sometimes they bring them in preservation boxes so it's like a fun little surprise on Christmas."
Gowns range in price from $150 to $1,500, with sizes ranging from 0-28. Clerks are available to assist customers, but there’s no appointment necessary.
"It's all about empowering women,” Berry said. "And I think that's also what makes them really excited about it. Not only did we find our dream dress at a great price, but we also gave back to other women and it feels really good to be able to do that."
