The maintenance man of our apartment building knows of my love of photography, particularly of birds. I followed him to a dogwood tree on the fourth floor and sure enough there in the shelter of the crotch of a branch was a hummingbird sitting on a nest. We have resident hummers here which must depend on feeders because it is hardly warm out around here and I wondered how they managed to survive. Evidently the nest is warm enough for lounging between feeding forays. The tiny nest and bird in it would have fit nicely in the palm of my hand entirely. Little bits of lichen are somehow attached to the nest material making it well camouflaged in its environment. This is a first for me .
