A dead porpoise washed ashore in Long Beach Saturday evening, adding to an unsettling rise in such occurrences in Washington State this year.
The porpoise was found along a popular stretch of shoreline just beyond the World Kite Museum. Police arrived on the scene shortly after receiving a call from a concerned witness.
“It’s sad, but kind of beautiful,” said one witness captivated by the sunset reflecting on the water around the marine mammal.
More than a dozen porpoises have washed up on Washington beaches since early May, including three on Whidbey Island and eight along the San Juan Islands.
