Will the transit of Venus be visible in western Washington?
Yes...but as always, if cloud cover permits. The 'transit' is simply the passage of Venus over the face of the sun from our perspective on earth. It will appear to move over the upper left hand side of the sun beginning about 3pm next Tuesday, exiting the upper right hand side of the sun at about 9pm. It's important to recognize that you should not try to observe the transit without eye protection. Undoubtedly several astronomy-hobby groups will offer 'Venus parties' with special telescopes set up to offer good views. So far, I know the Tacoma Astronomical Society is planning such a party beginning at 3pm at the Chambers Bay Park in University Place...if it isn't cloudy!
