Why is it so quiet outside when it's snowing?
It could be because so many commuters, school children and teachers are holding their breath...but that's not really the case. Research at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab (run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) points to two reasons: The complex shape of snow crystals and the pores or air spaces in the snow pack both absorb sound waves...making it quiet.
