Is it true that much of the air we  breathe comes from the oceans?

Yes. In fact, fifty percent of the oxygen we breathe comes from plankton; microscopic forms of life in the sea that use photosynthesis to transform carbon dioxide into oxygen (in addition to other important substances). So thank a 'plankton' (phyto-plankton to be exact)...for one of every two breaths you take!
