Is it true melting ice is releasing additional 'greenhouse' gases into the atmosphere?

Yes; scientists from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks have identified roughly 150,000 separate methane 'seeps' in both Alaska and Greenland. The methane is mostly from very old deposits. As the ice melts, the methane is able to escape into the atmosphere. That's a major source of concern, since methane, together with CO2, is a powerful greenhouse gas. Scientists are concerned the release of this gas from warming and melting ice will lead to further warming.
