I'm a small boat sailor...usually on lakes. Any tips on how to find good wind on otherwise flat days?
Yes. If there's some sun, seek out sea breezes, which are caused by more heating over land than water. You see this on any sunny summer day. Walk barefoot through the water-it's cool. Walk barefoot on grass-much warmer. Walk barefoot on pavement-it's hot! Peak sea breezes occur in the afternoon hours; sail close to land (without running aground!) without much vegetation (it absorbs and re-radiates more heat)...or with plenty of pavement. One additional tip-because 'points' or 'peninsulas' have converging sea breezes from both sides, especially good winds can be found in such areas.
