How far away can you see lightning and hear thunder?
There's no absolute distance, but the maximum distance thunder can usually be heard is six to ten miles. The maximum distance for seeing lightning is usually around fifteen miles. However, heavy rainfall, low clouds or rising terrain can reduce that distance considerably. On the other hand, what are called 'dry' thunderstorms can make it possible to see thunderstorms at a much greater distance. Dry thunderstorms are ones with high bases (the bottoms of the cloud) where rain falls but evaporates before it reaches the ground.
