It's been a major cause...but not the only one. The heat is joined by a low snow year, especially in March and April. Those months are particularly important to the water supply picture in the Rockies. It's a trend which has meant very little moisture...accelerating the drying of vegetation in the Rockies. It also fits in with a longer range trend of shorter winters, earlier springs and higher snow levels (i.e., less snow at lower elevations).
