This pattern develops when high pressure is located to the northeast of Forks, usually over southern B.C. or east of the Cascades while a zone of low pressure is located offshore. Because air tends to flow from high pressure to low pressure, the air moves from the northeast or east. As those winds move down the west slopes of the Olympics, they move through some of the river valleys draining toward the ocean; for example, the Hoh, the Quinault and the Sol Duc. Those narrow river valleys cause the winds to accelerate, just like the flow of water accelerates when you pinch a garden hose.
