Seattle Forecast: Monday, May 12, 2008

Lows: 42-47
Mostly Cloudy
Highs: 55-62
Increasing Clouds

A Speedbump Before the Heat Wave

UPDATED Monday at 7pm

A typical pattern begins the day with low morning clouds giving way to at least partial afternoon clearing. Today brought the reverse of that pattern. Partial clearing this morning with swelling cumulus clouds, capped by higher clouds drifting inland from a warm front offshore. SEATAC reported a high of 59, still below the average high of 64. This morning's low was 42.

Tonight, a little light rain is possible, mainly along the coast and southwest interior from that offshore warm front. This system just offshore will be absorbed into a larger system farther to the west over the Pacific. The new system will bring increasing rain throughout Tuesday, probably heaviest during the afternoon.

The mountains will see rain at or below 6,000 to 7,000', resulting in widespread melting and run off of the remaining snow pack. Some spotty rainfall is also likely east of the Cascades.

Longer range, a strong area of high pressure will build later Wednesday, resulting in decreasing showers. With higher pressures centered to the north and east, and a narrow zone of warm, low pressure air surging up from California into western Washington, temperatures will begin to soar Thursday. The hottest weather is likely Friday and possibly Saturday-well into the 80's with a dry offshore flow. SEATAC's existing record for Friday is 84, and 85 on Saturday. Cooling is likely Sunday as surface winds shift to a cooler onshore flow.

Northwest forecast from NWCN

Rain At Times

Warmer Air Starting To Move In

Really Warm By The End Of The Week!

Today we are getting read to see a pretty wet warm front move into the Northwest. Most of the rain will stick to western Washington and northwestern Oregon today, but showers will increase for most spots this afternoon and evening. This pattern is part of the set up process for us to see some very hot weather by the end of the week.

Look for increasing rain for spots west this morning, really picking up late this morning. Then we can expect the rain to stick with us for the rest of the day. Warm fronts typically bring in light but steady precipitation for longer periods of time...VS cold fronts that bring in heavier precipitation for shorter amounts of time. So then, expect areas of rain west, pushing east through the day. That being said, if you are in southern Oregon today, like Medford, you should stay mostly dry.

Temperatures won't be all that warm today, but tomorrow the warm up starts. In fact, the showers will be on the decrease tomorrow and the sunshine will start moving back in. Thursday the really hot weather will move back in, and stay with us through Saturday. We have a legitimate chance to break or tie some records across the Northwest through Saturday. Into Sunday a cooler more marine or ocean air mass will start to move in for more clouds and cooler weather. Enjoy!
Have a great Tuesday!
