Seattle Weather: Thursday, July 2, 2009

Gradually Warmer

Updated Thursday 7AM

North winds kicked up on Wednesday afternoon and helped to keep temperatures comfortable in the mid 70s to 80 degrees. The winds will turn a little more offshore today and that will help push temperatures up about 4-6 degrees today.

High pressure has will remain along the west coast all the way through the holiday weekend for plenty of sunshine. Winds will remain offshore today and tomorrow which will block our usual cooling by the ocean allowing temperatures to warm well into the 80s today and Friday.

Friday the highs will be in the mid to upper 80s most spots though about 5-10 degrees cooler near the water in the northwest interior. Temperatures will cool a little on the 4th of July but remain sunny and warm for the holiday.

On Sunday, the onshore winds will begin to pick up cooling us back into the mid to upper 70s but staying mostly sunny except for low clouds along the coast. There is a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains on Sunday.

An upper level system will spread clouds back into western Washington on Monday with a chance of a few showers developing later in the day especially in the mountains. This will give us a chance of a few showers Tuesday and Wednesday with cooler temperatures.

Later in the week we will return to our more normal morning clouds and afternoon sun.

Northwest forecast from NWCN

Mostly Clear

Even Hotter

Same Pattern All Week

Thursday

If it hasn't been hot enough for you yet, it might get there the next few days.

High pressure will stay in control, giving us plenty of clear weather. We're also seeing a switch in the wind pattern, cutting off the moderating effect of the ocean. A thermal trough or heat low will develop and move up from the south along the coast. When that happens, it pulls winds toward the coast, and typically brings western Washington and Oregon their warmest weather. That will definitely be the case this week, as highs soar well into the 80s and 90s west of the Cascades. With that in mind, a heat advisory has been issued for the Willamette Valley through Saturday. Meanwhile, highs will also head toward the 90s east of the Cascades. Also, we may see some isolated thunderstorms in southern Oregon and southern Idaho.

Dry weather will last into the weekend, so be careful with fireworks on the 4th. A red flag warning is in effect for much of western Washington, so fire danger is high. By Sunday, we could start to see some thunderstorms in the mountains and showers could develop in the lowlands by Tuesday.
