ORTING, Wash. -- Homicide investigators say a man found dead in his front yard in Orting Wednesday morning was killed by someone who broke into his home overnight Tuesday.

The body of 53-year-old Mike Compton was found around 3 a.m. at his home on Ford Lane SW near Kansas Street. Coroners say he died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Orting police believe someone or some people broke into Compton garage between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Police say Compton confronted the suspect or suspects. There was a struggle and Compton was shot and killed.

"It's going to put a void in this town," said Troy West, a childhood friend of Compton.

He said Compton routinely volunteered for community events. West said he wasn't surprised Compton likely died trying to protect his property.

"Mike's that way," said West. "He was raised that way; take care of yourself."

Police have found the weapon used in the crime and were interviewing multiple persons of interest.  At his point, they don't know if the shooting was random, intentional or accidental. They do not believe there are any armed and dangerous suspects at large.

Police are asking for tips to be sent to the Orting Police Department, via the City of Orting website.
