Worried mom invents anti-texting software for cars

WELLESLEY, Mass. - 17-year-old Katie Cranley just got her driver's license. On this day she's going along for a ride to test new software that parents can put on their kids phones that doesn't allow them to send or receive texts or calls when they drive.

"This is blocked now so I can't call anybody," says Katie.

With news stories every day about the deaths and dangers of using a phone while driving, even Katie believes this is something she can live with.

"I think it would be hard to adjust to at first, but I think it's really worth the effort to try and restrain yourself from calling while on the phone" she said.

Concord, Massachusetts mom Darcy Ahl came up with the idea for izup (pronounced eyes-up) after watching her teen son weave across the road while trying to answer his cell phone.

"I was badly frightened by the experience and found myself wondering out loud if there wasn't some way to keep him and other teenagers off the phone while they were learning to drive," Ahl said.

The phone-freezing software kicks in at 5 mph and doesn't turn off for red lights or traffic. The program even works if one is a passenger instead of a driver.

It does allow calls to 911 or mom and dad.

"If they're not given a choice, if you just say if you want the privileges of driving, you have to have this application on your phone," said Ahl. "I think it's a really good thing."

"The downloadable software starts at $5 a month or $50 a year to use, but the Concord mom's company says it's not just for teens, she's already talking to cities like Boston and companies that might want their employees to have cell phones but not use them while driving."

Dan thanks for this article. I enjoyed the video at the beginning of the article, it really showed what the app does. As parents, one of the things that we need to realize is that we can't completely control the lives of our teenagers. We are going to have to warn them, and they are going to make their own decisions. I think this app has a lot of potential, but also poses some problems. I am in agreement with other comments that the app doesn't work for the iPhone--which every teenager (and adult) wants. Having a company like Apple back up Izup could be a good thing. I just wonder how many people would pay for this service.

Great idea, great service. But it doesn't work on an iPhone. The phone with the biggest market share, the phone that most teenagers have or want to have, it doesn't work on.

Great idea. I understand why you wouldn't want passengers to use their phones if the intent is for teens driving. What would stop the passenger from passing the phone to the driver. Maybe it should be on all phones and maybe not, but at least it's a starting point.

I love it! I agree with many of the other views. It should be mandatory on all phones. I would love to give all the cellphone companies a swift kick in the you know what for allowing phones to spell words in the first place. It's a phone, not a typewriter.

Can we also force people to not dig around for CD's, put their make-up on, eat mcdonalds, and my personnel favorite pick their nose. People get distracted with all these things also why should we just narrow it down to cell phones lets go all the way and make the road a lot safer. and can we also make it so everybody drives all the time with their hands at 10 and 2 and I won't get flipped off so much for going 5 over the speed limit when somebody else is going 100 mph.

morganthomas: typical neo-con know-nothing and bigot. livinglife: because the app doesn't know if you're driving, just that you are moving. Duh. Hands-free devices are no solution at all! The problem is not the hand, it's the brain. Hands-free devices are just as bad as holding the phone. Since using a cell phone while driving makes you as bad a driver as a drunk, the penalty should be the same.

Won't work if you lose the GPS signal, which can be intermittent at best on assisted GPS phones. Not to mention if your teen Googles how to disable GPS through a service menu, they can turn GPS off while driving and do as they please. nine11c2, it wouldn't require use of an accelerometer, as that is not common enough on phones, plus it can only measure accelerations, not velocities.

It should at least be made so they can call only while having a hands free device. What if there is an emergency or something. Who has time to go and deactivate the app just to place a call?

I see real problems with this. * It will only work on certain phones. I'm assuming smart phones with GPS enabled, possibly work with an accelerometer. * It means you now can't use a phone to get directions from anyone but mom or dad. * Why are we limiting the passengers? But you can't tell if someone is riding or driving. * If you're using a GPS to judge speed, simply covering the phone, disconnecting it from seeing GPS, will allow it to be used. This has to be enabled or phones will be unusable inside. * Should we not allow teens to use phone based navigation devices? * The software will prevent people from using a phone when on a bus or a train. That is a very cool idea. I don't think that she is a bad parent of has given up, I think that parents in this day and age need to be flexible and understand that giving a "harsh talking to" isn't going to do much damage. This mother is being proactive and thinking outside the box. Imagine if your child was a passenger in the car - wouldn't you want the reassurance that the teen driving is not texting or talking on their cell phone? I think it eases many fears but I also think this is a valuable application for not just teens, but for all individuals who can't seem to put the phone down when driving. Great invention! Too bad there isn't something like this for people who drink and then want to drive (with exception of blow and go but those people have already been caught! )

Hey college guy....The worst thing they did was give them the right to vote. And then they gave them drivers licenses. Ah....Ah...42% of the women voted for Clinton because they like his nose. What's that tell you?I hope this lady gets her idea adapted, but I doubt it will happen. To many people will fight it as their "right" to free communications. And you can bet the ever stupid ACLU will fight it just to get their name in the limelight.

i think it's a great idea - and yes, not just for teens. i recently had a coworker ask to "play" with my new cell. he told me he wanted to be sure he could text while driving, and added, "i know, it's terrible, but i just can't help it!" i couldn't believe it! i'd love to buy this and install it on his phone without him knowing it. and NO, i do not text or talk on the cell while i'm driving. i'm a big believer in practicing what you preach. :-)

Excellent idea, as the reality is: people of all ages will text or read texts while driving. Certainly at stoplights and in slow traffic. But what a horribly written article! The writer (certainly not a journalist yet) AND his editor are in serious need of writing classes. Ye gads, how poorly written can you get?! Who approved hiring them?? (This is CNN quality?! My kids in high school write better articles for their school paper.)

Good idea, however if the article is to be taken seriously the content needs to be clear. How do you restrain yourself from calling when your already on the phone? I am sure the speaker meant to say, (or did say) "try and restrain yourself from calling while behind the wheel." ("I think it would be hard to adjust to at first, but I think it's really worth the effort to try and restrain yourself from calling while on the phone" she said.)

They should put this on all phones automatically, BUT have it that the phones cannot be used in a car without a bluetooth. I am so sick of seeing people drive with the phone to their ears. I have a neighbor that has almost hit me several times because of her road-rage attitude and holding her phone up to her ear.

Great Idea!!! And no its not an app for parenting (the person who wrote that obviously has either no teens, perfect teens or never was a teen. Teens certainly do not corner the market on talking or texting while driving, I see adults do it every day, both men and women. Just because the womans inspiration for this invention was the desire to force her kids to be safer drivers certainly doesn't mean she doesn't parent her children. You should be thanking this innovator instead of bashing her.. that little device could save yours or someone you loves life one day. I sometimes wonder what kind of lives the forum trolls lead.. sitting around looking for something or someone to bash because they are self-loathing and have never achieved anything loftier than a stellar beer burp. It's sad really.
