FEDERAL Way, Wash. – What happened in Bremerton caused Scott Depuy to talk to KING 5 Wednesday.

Nine children went to the hospital after police say two students brought prescription drugs to Mountain View Middle School. None of the kids were seriously harmed, but the two responsible face long suspensions and possible jail time.

Scott Depuy's 17-year-old son, Ryan, overdosed in 2008 on a mixture of cough syrup, painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs.

"I don't think people realize what is sitting on their vanity in their bathroom or what's sitting in their cabinet in their kitchen for anyone to come in and grab, they don't realize they need to treat that like a loaded gun," said Scott. "It's sitting in your house like a time bomb."

Scott says parents are as much to blame as the kids.

"The drug dealers are in our houses now. We are the drug dealers right now," said Scott. "We're very good about locking up our firearms. People don't realize what's in that prescription bottle. We're talking about the same thing."

Scott and police say prescriptions should be locked up and, when they're expired or no long needed, they should be thrown out.

Saturday, the Drug Enforcement Administration is providing drop boxes around the country to collect unneeded drugs. For more information and locations, click here.

The drug companies are not "drug dealers." They make a product SOME people really need. SICK people. Stop crying about how everyone is to blame. If you take a medication ( Listen up KIDDIES..) that are not prescribed to you for nothing more than getting high, then guess what? You may DIE. You may also die if you take the medication even as prescribed. Nothing in life is certain. You may eat a tainted piece of fish and die from that too! All drugs can kill. Everything is a risk. Stop with this craziness. It's making it hard for those of us who HAVE actual medical conditions to get the relief we need. Funny....I often wonder where these folks are getting all of these prescriptions. My docs at Everett Clinic keep tight control of their prescription pads.

Doesn't help when TV news (Fox on this case, last night) runs instructions videos on how exactly to shoot up & smoke Oxycontin. While it's true that the head of the Republicant party, Limbaugh, is a drug addict and therefore all Reichwing drug addicts are blameless, it is ALSO freeking true that these painkillers serve a purpose, while depicting details of smoking them or injecting them does NOTHING to help the situation. Make oxy as hard to get as ephedrine and watch the problem dis-a-freeking-pear. Oh, fer crying out loud, drug test Limbaugh and throw him in the joint - his freedom means prescription drug use is acceptable. and if my painkiller use makes me a "dealer" then EVERYONE who drinks is a liquor store

I feel the way imsunshine does...our nation is fast becoming a sesspool of irresponsibility. People out of work expect a seat at the state gravy train at tax payer expense. Insurance companies and doctors are expected to fix our health problems (quickly and cheaply) brought on by years of sedentary living. McDonald's is responsible for my middle aged bulge, certainly not me. Why bother to have a savings account or a 401k when the government stands ready to take care of your every need? Each political party blames the other for the state of the economy while claiming they bear none of the responsibility. My health is bad so I'll sue McDonald's for making high fat hamburgers. Drugs and alcohol are glamorized in the movies while drunk drivers get off scott free. After all its not their fault they were drunk when they were driving. They couldn't help it, its a societal problem.

I see blame...blame...blame someone else everyday in the paper. blame the parents because the children take drugs. blame the city because a child chooses to put pennies on railroad tracks. What about the moron that drinks and drives and the persons family he harms sues the bar; really.... come on people, hold yourself accountable when you make a bad decision. How else are you suppose to learn. Second issue, DEA is providing drop boxes around the country for unneeded drugs, really ???? And who is going to monitor those? Any druggie around is going to figure out how to steal one of those boxes and OD. Are we going to blame the DEA for that too??? These kids in Bremerton knew injesting these drugs was bad or they wouldnt have stolen them to begin with; they would have asked for them.

We should give teens weekly pill dispensers, charcoal, and stomach pumps. We can't stop kids from taking prescription drugs, but we can make it safer for them. Forget about teaching drug abstinence, that won't work!

As I read this story I can't help but think of my sister dead at the age of 46. Victim to the drug companies that push the idea that a pill will fix anything. She didnt have anything else in her system but what was prescribed. Do I think there is a need for medication....absolutely! Do I think people are over prescribed...sure do! We all need to be more proactive in what we put in our bodies. We are the example to these kids. There is always going to be issues with kids doing things that are illegal and even somtimes stupid. But these "prescribed drugs" are VERY dangerous. Just as dangerous as meth, herione, cocaine and yes even alcohol. Drug companies in my eyes are just legal dealers. Teach your kids that these medications recieved from pharmacies are just as dangerous as drugs bought from a stranger on the corner.

First, I've got to agree with washingtonian's thoughts on plutonomics. I certainly think that parents should be held responsible if they have not taken reasonable efforts to secure their "own & legal" medication. Everyone probably has their own opinion on what a reasonable effort is, but I would think that if they somehow have them locked up, that should be sufficient. Above an undetermined age, if the child is still able to obtain the medication through forcing that safeguard, they should be held responsible and treated as adults. I think that undetermined age should be much lower than the law currently allows. They can't be charged as an adult because they are only 14, 15, 16, etc. is a bunch of garbage. Under normal circumstances, children know the difference between right and wrong at a fairly early age.

Blame the drugs companies. They are the ones that promote their drugs like candy on TV.
