SEATTLE -- Volunteers with the Red Cross of Western Washington mobilized early Friday to help people who might get hit by Hurricane Earl.

A handful of volunteers departed SeaTac Airport for the eastern seaboard early Friday.

Kathleen Howe, a substitute teacher with Kitsap Central, was among them. She's heading to Rhode Island where she'll man the phone banks and organize the donations.

"In the job I do now, I am stunned by people's generosity and thoughtfulness and the way they reach out and help out each other," said Howe.

Howe has helped out with hurricanes Katrina, Ike and Gustav. She says she's lost count, but has probably volunteer for over 20 natural disasters.
