SEATTLE -- Moments after parading demonstrators painted a heart and the word "peace" in the middle of Seattle's 6th Ave, we heard the first glass breaking. Just 20 feet away a wave of black-clad vandals rolled over us and began breaking out the windows of the Nike Town Store.
As photographer Keith Bubach and I focused on the action, another wave of assault came from behind. More of them began to strike at us with sticks and swipe at the camera.
Four times they attempted to knock the camera off Buback's shoulder. A good Samaritan joined me in trying to fend off the attacks and protect Buback. They struck at us but caused no injuries and fled the moment a row of Seattle police officers on foot and bicycles rolled up.
We were then mistaken for vandals and were sprayed by the officers. The actual vandals dissolved into the crowds. Some of their black coats, masks and scarves were littered on the ground.
