A Bryde's whale that washed up in the South Sound last month is being honored by the Squaxin Island Tribe. They say the fact that the whale appeared in the Tribe's traditional territory is of great cultural importance.
Squaxin ancestors made use of other species of whale, along with fish and shellfish. The Tribe believes that the whale belongs to everyone, and so is working to eventually assemble and display the whale's skeleton at the Squaxin Island Tribe's Museum Library and Research Center.
