The NRA suggestion to put armed police in every school has set off a fierydebate in Western Washington.

"Once an intruder comes on campus, he needs to be neutralized as soon as possible. And, the only way that will happen is with a highly trained officer with a weapon," said school safety consultant Martin Speckmaier with Comprehensive School Safety, a company that advises hundreds of school districts.

"I'm not saying the plan is bad necessarily, but realistically its not going to fly," said King County Sheriff John Urquart.

Urquart says the idea is very expensive at a time Washington schools are struggling to pay teachers.

KING 5's Linda Brill talked with school parents and security experts at Garfield High School, the only Seattle school with a full time dedicated police officer on campus.
