Although the Boston Marathon bombings happened on the other side the country, they hit home for a Seattle man.

His childhood friend, 29-year-old Krystle Campbell, was one of the victims.

Immediately after the attack, Dave LeClair started planning a fundraiser at Belltown’s Spitfire, a sports bar where Boston fans gather.

“It’s awful that her life was cut so short,” he said.

Despite being separated by thousands of miles, LeClair recalls a picture he took of Campbell at a school science fair.

“When people pass away, people only say great stuff about what a great person they were. Sometimes, I have trouble believing it, but this girl was definitely special,” said LeClair.

Campbell was watching marathoners cross the finish line when the blasts happened. She was killed and her best friend was critically injured.

“I felt like something needed to be done,” said LeClair.

The event planner is teaming with Spitfire to raise money on Thursday. Proceeds of the sales will go towards the mayor of Boston’s Victim Relief Fund.

“We had the Tv’s glued to it, it’s tough to watch anything else,” said Palani Stewart, the bar’s general manager.

Stewart also had friends competing in the marathon. Their times at last year’s race would have had them finishing around the same time the bombings happened.

“Thankfully they ran faster than they would normally because most of them were at that four hour mark,” said Stewart.

In a world where there’s tragedy, LeClair says it’s important to remember there’s also love.

“Even though it’s so far away, everyone cares about Boston,” he said.

The fundraiser goes from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday at Spitfire.

LeClair hopes to raise at least $5,000, but based on the response so far, he expects a lot more.
