Seattle resident Andrew Malinak will try to become the eighth person in history to swim the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
He will swim the 12-mile stretch between Vancouver Island the Olympic Peninsula without a wet suit. Malinak will be challenged by the water temperature, which is expected to be in the low 50s, as well as strong currents and shipping traffic.
But he said the effort hasn't been his alone.
"It's been a huge community effort and that's what I love the sport," Malinak said. "On the day of the swim, the six hours will be me in the water by myself, but out of the water it's an amazing community."
Depending on the weather, he will attempt the feat Sunday or Monday morning.
