Seattle cracking down on light rail parking rules

SEATTLE - It's almost impossible to find parking near light rail station in Seattle, and the city is making it a lot harder. They're cracking down on property owners offering long-term parking in light rail zones.

If you want to ride light rail you now have three options: walk, ride the bus or figure out how to smuggle your car into the neighborhood. There is almost no legal long term parking in the area and the city wanted it that way.

Long before the light rail carried its first passengers, the City of Seattle decided not to provide any parking by the stations.

"We don't want the areas around the light rail stations to become acres of parking areas and parking lots," said Councilman Tom Rasmussen, Chair of the Transportation Committee.

In fact the city made it nearly impossible to get long term parking near the stations. Extended neighborhood parking requires a permit, and local companies were forbidden from offering long term parking in their lots.

KING 5 has obtained letters to at least four property owners ordering them to stop using their lots for long term parking, but people who would like to use light rail say in many cases there is no way to get to light rail without driving there.

"If you live in Renton, it's quicker to drive here park and take rail. They should have prepared for parking," said one resident.

The city recognizes it's a problem but has no intention of adding parking, saying the quality of life for people who live in the neighborhood has to outweigh the convenience to light rail users.

"We want people to enjoy living in their neighborhoods and the more those areas become places where people want to park cheaply the less they will be areas where people will want to be," said Rasmussen.

The city says they may look at allowing some businesses to long term parking, but that would first require a change to city policy.

This is one of my greatest "peeve"with Seattle and King County Administration. They run the transportation system like" carnival rides". Its an arduous safari after 5:45PM, especially if you live in Southeast King County. Light Rail and Sounder train are fancy carnival rides. Metro and Sound Transportation venues are not run with the intent to move people quickly and efficiently. Why don't local shuttles connect Transit Centers to the Light Rail Destinations. Why are the trains and bus not working together? Why do busses to outlaying communities stop at 5:30PM? Why doesn't the buses feed the local communities to the Transit Centers to the trains 24/7? People would shop in the local business or downtown Seattle after work if they had more time, instead of running for the last "milk run" home.. You want to stimulate the ecomony, get someone that can administer transportation for profit. Look a Las Vegas. We paid 2/3 too much and could have had a better system for profit

Thanks Hskyfan! I've been wondering why no one talks about the fact that the light rail doesn't stop at Southcenter. At last some one else thinks that is pretty stupid. How can the city legally tell a business owner or anyone else what they can or cant' do on their own property? Ridership is down? Hello... can't get to the station and I want to go to the mall. Guess I will just drive.

Just one more example of Sound Transit being utterly BRAIN DAMAGED - spend billions on a rail system that only people within walking distance can use... Another example: Run it right past one of the biggest shopping centers in the region, but don't bother to put a station there.... Can't believe we voted to increase and extend the sales tax for them to spend another 20 years wasting billions more $ building more rail stations that on one can/will use...

Seems like we the people spent Millions or was it Billions to build a Light Rail (aka Trolley Car) from downtown to the airport in such a way that no-one can use it or wants to use it. If you expect people to use the trolley car, then make it user friendly. I understand the concept of not using city residential street parking or parking in a business area, but for the City to step in and tell Private Enterprise when and how to use their Parking Lots is too much government intervention into the private sector. That decision belongs to the individual Property Owner and not the (Peoples Rebublic) City of Seattle. The original intent of the Light Rail - Interurban was to move people from Downtown to Sea-Tac - I see that as a failure. Take a look at the System from Chicago's O'Hara to the downtown Loop. Fast - Private Right of Way and directly to the Airport. The end of the line is in the Terminal proper and a quick Esculator or Elevator ride to the Boarding and check in Area

Quality of life and enjoying the neighborhoods?... Rainier Beach, Tukwila (Pac Hwy) really you can't walk safely now as it is! If you build park and ride lots that increases revenue to local businesses and attract the right kind of people to the area that just might clean it up! Stupid decision.

Totally agree with Tom Rasumussen! Such a sage, because people who park in residential areas to get the lightrails really make the place slummy and ghetto. Such as that park and ride in Mercer Island, there are gunshots and drugs in that corner all the time...

Park and Ride lots....what a concept! Even WSDOT understands that if you provide parking areas, it helps with people commuting and cutting down on road congestion. Once more, the supreme stupidity and lack of complete common sense comes from the City. This should be the new referendum drive by Tim Eyman.....if the City and Sound Transit plan on using any more taxpayer dollars, they need to accommodate the taxpayers by providing adequate parking and access to these taxpayer-funded facilities. Otherwise, all of these public officials ought to be thrown out of office. Next up.....banning all cars from the Alaska Way Viaduct AND I-5, because they cause smog in the City. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few".

Seems like the Law of Unintended Consequences is repeatedly jumping up and biting utopian moron idiots like Councilman Tom Rasmussen, who have to respond with ever more rules, regulations and laws. Hey idiot (yes, I'm talking to you Rasmussen) - get it through your thick skull that this boondoggle DOES NOT do what the people want. We want to park and ride. Not walk, bus, or bicycle and ride. My message to the good people of Seattle - please make a note of who the simpering idiots were that supported this mess, and vote the bums out the next chance you get. They do not represent you, only their own distorted utopian views.

It just shows you more of the pattern of stupidity and theft. There was never any intention to make light rail usable by anyone but downtown residents. Take money from everyone to service the few, that is the Seattle/King County way. Did they ever stop and think that there might be people that a bus route is impractical? If you live in a rural area it can take hours to get to the train terminal by bus.

Oh good, yet more proof that Fail Rail was never intended to reduce traffic congestion in and around Seattle.

Typical of the transit systems in this area...if you build it they WON'T come. No wonder the ridership for light rail is so low compared to what they were estimating. Sound Transit...just another name for idiotic spending.

Stupid policy if you ask me. Look at other light rail systems like BART, MAX, etc... They all have park and ride lots.

Hey Rasmussen, you dope, riders have to GET TO THE TRAIN! Get it? Seattle continues to drink the stupid juice, even after Mayor Puffy is gone.

It's all about rider usage isn't it? Pretty simple: If I can't get to it, I'm not gonna use it !

I support the city's prohibition on long-term street parking in residential areas, but private businesses in commercially-zoned areas should be allowed to sell excess parking spaces to rail commuters. Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
