Seattle's new snow-fighting strategy: salt

SEATTLE - The City of Seattle has new storm-fight policy this year that's supposed to be much better for drivers: salt.

Last year when the snow would fall, sanding trucks would come out. There was sand on top of snow, cars on top of sand on top of snow, which meant roads were packed with an icy, dirty, rock-solid, pot-holey mess.

Snow plows didn't seem to help then, but this year the city is employing a new strategy. Salt is the new weapon in the City of Seattle's arsenal.

This winter's strategy is pre-emptive. When the bad weather starts to roll in, the salt trucks will roll out and drop weather-fighting salt or a salt-brine mixture.

The new recipe is designed to melt snow and ice down to 25 degrees. It's worked well so far the past couple of weeks in these cold temperatures.

Transportation crews have a three-pronged attack. Crews will have the main roads cleared within eight hours of the storm; for less used roads, one lane cleared within eight hours of the storm. For others roads, they'll examine on an as-needed basis.

liveincovington those that flee the hell-hole that is Southern Cal bring their (your?) crappy driving habits as well as the paralyzing inability to drive in a dusting of snow to our region. Morons that think a giant SUV somehow gives them the ability to speed on ice and then stop on a dime, or think that it's better to try and climb a snowy hill at SLOW speed etc..etc.. And THEN get indignant when their inabilities are pointed out. thus....resulting in the whinging of enough of them to enact the addition of salt on roads that have been happily negotiated for ages.

From what I have seen up here its not only the Califorina's that cant drive in the snow, but most of the people in Washington also dont know how, I love snow, it helps keep the idiots off the road so those of us who grew up driving in snow can drive and not worry about someone plowing into the back of you, AND alittle salt is no more harmful than a good ocean spray....

I agree with comments about a "cheap" yet EXPENSIVE solution. Look at east coast cars, RUST, RUST, RUST Salt will corrode vehicles, rocker panels, under carriages, muffler systems, floors, quarter panels etc... Salt is not the answer...........learning how to drive in it is. Oh wait that is impossible in the land of liberals.225,000 scruggs

What a bunch of morons. Yeah, a week or two of salt on the roads a year is going to cause our cars to fall apart and kill everything in the environment. Right. Idiots. If we had winters like cities on the East coast, we would be justified in investing in an intensive plowing strategy. The occasional nature of our cold weather dictates a strategy that balances our pocketbooks, the environment, and necessity to travel. This strategy worked great for years until idiot environmentalists enacted unrealistic "zero tolerance" policies. That is what is BS, and that is what got Nickels voted out.

I hope they refrain from using salt. It's absolute BS... just for a few days of convenience we are going to pollute the heck out of our waters and mess up our fish and wildlife. We need legislature to write up a bill for a full ban on this stuff, it's toxic.

To Davidaadams: Pardon me, your ignorance is showing. What does California (notice the correct spelling) have to do with anything related to icy roads in Seattle???

Salt is great for the automotive business, bad for car owners. Obviously it rusts out most vehicles. In addition, although salt will melt snow and ice to a point, when overcome by temperature or water volume, it'll either have no visible effect or will end up pooling and becoming sheet ice when it refreezes. How is that better? And it isn't so great for the environment either. Another cheap solution with typical cheap solution failings.

Make sure and wash your cars often because the salt rusts your car out in a matter of years!

Why is there uncertainty around what should be done to combat snow and ice? There are cities back east that have snow plowing/salting strategies that work very well. Can't we just model after what is already known to work? Why are we trying to reinvent the wheel here in Seattle?

yeah, we need to rust out the undercarriage of all the cars in seattle with salt for the 2-10 days a year we might have snow on the ground. not worth it, learn to drive in snow or just stay off it, and no, buying an SUV doesnt make you a safe driver in the snow if you still dont know how to drive on it.

And remember, salt is the worst thing for your automobiles. It can be a real destroyer if you do not get it off soon,.

It may work for light snow falls but not heavier ones. If we get dumped on like last year, Seattle will end up with a layer of ice under compacted snow/sand. More of a recipe for accidents, IMO. They need to plow *before* sanding/salting. Things work out much better that way.
