Renton Police believe a hammer was used in the deadly beating a homeless man whose body was found at the Renton Highlands shopping center.

Police were called at about 8 a.m. Sunday after a passerby discovered the body.

Officers found the 52-year-old man lying in an alcove at the back of a closed business in the 2800 block of NE Sunset Blvd. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and police say he had suffered obvious blunt force injuries to the head.

Many in the area said they knew the victim and stopped by the crime scene. He's believed to be a transient man well-known to the area.

"I feel bad about it," said Margaret Sagmo, who lives in the area. "We'll miss him."

Witnesses in the area told officers about another homeless man who had been belligerent and who was staying nearby. Officers found him at a nearby store, and a subsequent investigation identified him as connected to the incident. He was arrested and booked into King County Jail.

Police are not looking for any outstanding suspects.

"What we found out is that people involved in this incident do know each other and are familiar with each other," said Renton Police Sergeant Dan Figaro. "This is not something we believe was random."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Renton Police reference case 2014-6661.
