SEATTLE – More than 1,000 firefighters hit the stairs of the Columbia Center on Sunday, step by step, raising money to fight blood cancers.

Firefighters from 256 departments in 24 U.S. states, Canada, New Zealand and Germany participated in 19th Annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb, the largest firefighter climb in the U.S.

Participants were clad in full bunker gear and breathing apparatus, collectively weighing about 50 pounds, and sprint-climbed 1,311 stairs / 69 stories from the Fifth Avenue lobby to the 73rd floor observation deck of the 76-story building.

These firefighters are awesome! And this is for a worthy cause as well. I know how serious this disease is and how it can can impact individuals and families very suddenly. A close family member of mine was treated for Leukemia at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the Swedish Medical Center. She was fortunate that her cancer was caught early on and that it hadn't become acute. After a bone marrow transplant and months of recovery she was cured and was was blessed to return to normal life. At the time more than 50% of leukemia patients weren't fortunate enough to survive. I am not sure of the survival rate now.
