A police standoff with a man who held his ex-girlfriend hostage at a Tumwater gas station has ended.

After an all-day standoff with police and SWAT team members, the 50-year-old suspect was taken into police custody shortly after 6:30 p.m. The hostage was released without harm.

The standoff started at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at gas station in the 700 block of Trosper Road SW. The man held his ex-girlfriend, a 42-year-old clerk at the station, hostage for nearly eight hours.

SWAT team members and negotiators were at the scene. Businesses in the area were evacuated and streets in the vicinity were shut down, halting everything in the small town.

The man and the woman were reportedly together for 15-20 years, but a restraining order is reportedly in effect.
