The Winter Olympics torch made its only visit to the United States for a ceremony Tuesday at the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine.

The torch was carried by skier Phil Mahre (mehr) of Yakima who won medals at the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid and the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo.

Mahre was cheered by a crowd of several thousand people, waving U.S. and Canadian flags and signs with the Olympics rings.

A childrens choir from nearby White Rock, B.C., sang the U.S. and Canadian anthems.

Gov. Chris Gregoire and British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell applauded as Mahre lit a cauldron at the Peace Arch. A Canadian runner carries the torch back into British Columbia where the games begin Friday at Vancouver.

When I watched the Torch ceremony at the Peace Arch on TV, I thought your cameramen could have shot from a better angle, perhaps more elevated from the type of booms they use at golf tournaments.. All we saw were the heads of the people crowed around the participants. I'm sure the organizers could also had made it easier for the media to film the event if they had blocked off a wider area. Also, I noticed Phil Mahre didn't salute with his right hand over his heart during the U. S. National Anthem. Has anyone asked him why? It seems he could have moved the Torch to his left hand.

The Governor should consider taking a few business classes. She obviously doesn't understand the need to promote Washington's businesses as well as she understands how to tax them. The Olympics could have been a genuine business stimulus for our state. But instead, the government is looking for ways to pull the money out of our pockets and our kid's pockets. They obviously don't get it. Who decided that the government's programs were more important than our individual finances and responsibilities?
