A cat in New Mexico has ballooned to 39 pounds and he will be put into foster care to get him back in shape before he's put up for adoption.

The elderly owner of the cat named "Meow" could no longer care for him so he's at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society.

A normal adult cat weighs between seven and 12 pounds. Meow wouldn’t fit on a normal scale so vets had to use one normally meant for dogs.

Meow will go into a foster home to slim down gradually, and then he will get a new home.

Follow Meow’s progress on the Shelter’s Facebook page.
