The school year starts on a sad note for two area high schools. Two students have died after collapsing at two separate high schools in the Puget Sound region.

A male student died Friday after he collapsed during third period P.E. class at Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood. Medics rushed to the high school but couldn’t revive the junior.

Many students said it's a regular requirement for many P.E. classes that students have to walk or run a mile under 16 minutes.

"We heard that he was running the mile on the track in the back and he had collapsed running it," said one student. "The P.E. teacher tried to give him CPR and it didn't work."

The student’s parents gave the district permission to reveal the student’s name, Matthew Truax, but there’s very little information about what caused his death.

In letter sent to parents Friday, the school said Matthew Truax was a respectful, hard-working young man who was serious about his education and an all-around nice young man who will be missed.

On Thursday in Lacey, an 18-year-old collapsed at River Ridge High. She died what the district said may have been medical issues. Her name is not being released.

Both school districts have offered services of grief counselors to students and staff.
