Students, family and faculty at Seattle Pacific University participated in a more than 90-year-old tradition Friday morning.

The Ivy Cutting was the beginning of graduation ceremonies for the class of 2014.

Each graduate receives a sprig of ivy, signifying both the student’s tie to SPU and the independence that comes with graduation. But on everyone's mind was the death of Paul Lee and how the gathering played a part in the healing process.

Seattle Pacific's commencement is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at KeyArena in Seattle.
