Her name is Beautiful Existence. And she admits she's a positive person. But for a self-proclaimed Nordie's girl, shopping only at Goodwill for an entire year wasn't easy.

"Every now and then, you'd see somebody with a new handbag or something," Existence says. "And you're just like 'Darn.'"

Yet this mom rose to the challenge. Everything from her jewelry, to her Christmas presents, to her furniture is from Goodwill.

There were some exceptions: food, toiletries and medication. Existence says the thrift store is not what it was 20 years ago.

"Very clean, they're very organized. They're stocked just like retail stores are. They have new product that's brought in," she says.

The big payoff is evident in her receipts. She's still calculating how much she's saved in the last year.

"Thousands. Absolutely thousands," she says.

Existence says she likes helping the environment by reusing merchandise, along with giving money to a non-profit that helps others train for jobs.

Existence has been keeping a blog about her progress. It's called Living the Goodwill Life.

It really is amazing at the things one can find at thrift stores. I have found, brand new name brand clothes with the tags on them, antiques. All at great prices. At Hayley_Crow Thanks for the info regarding the outlet store in everett. I didn't know they had one there.

Also, definately check out their outlet stores. They have 2, one in Seattle and one in Everett. I prefer the Everett Outlet personally. They have a huge variety of things for sale at even CHEAPER prices than their retail stores. Most everything is sold by weight by the pound. Who can beat .49 cents per pound for toys or $1.49 per pound for clothes? And most furniture is $5 or less!!! Definately a wonderful place during this crummy economy!

Although shopping at the Goodwill doesn't necessarily mean you'll get cheaper stuff. I bought a Christmas tree there, new in the box for 19.99. When I got it home it had a clearance price tag from Target for 15.99 on the bottom. That said, Goodwill can always be fun - you never know what you're going to find. Although the crusty antique dealers and pickers that live at the Dearborn store and prey upon employees bringing out new things kind of take the fun out of it.

Not "bitter" here but maybe a tad cynical. It's funny that some dippy hipster with a flair for self-promotion thinks it's a revelation that you save money by shopping at a thrift store. She gets her food, toiletries, and medication elsewhere, so that begs the question: Where does "Beautiful Existence" get her psychedelics?

Neat idea. My cousin always shops at thrift shops and we call her the Thrift Shop Queen. I wish I had enough to even shop at a thrift shop more. But I have learned to do wtih what I have and make do with what I have. Kind of what I learned growing up during WW II.

To the naysayers below: the difference is that she did it with style and in a generous way that encouraged and uplifted others. I, for one, appreciate what she did and am inspired. Thank you, Beautiful Existence.

Media can only show so much of who a person is in life and Elisa did a great job with the little amount of time she had to show what has happened in an entire year with this challenge. If you have read any of what Beautiful has posted for an entire year you would see that she is just a person who seems to want to make a difference in the world. Much more than I can say for the trolls that seem to want everybody in these posts to suffer as much as they are in life. Congrats Beautiful! I'll be watching to see what 2012 has in store for you and your new challenge. Ignore the ignorant.
