MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, Wash. - Alex Herbig has no idea what it's like to go hungry. But he sure feels for the people who do.

"The thing that touches me the most is these people are still hopeful and they have nothing to their name," said Herbig, a senior at Mountlake Terrace High School.

The 18-year-old has devoted his senior project to helping the poorest people in Haiti, those who live in a garbage dump and spend their days rummaging through the trash for their next meal.

"They flee to the only place that has some hope of finding maybe spoiled chicken or rotten eggs that they can cook over a fire," said Herbig.

Inspired by work that his church is doing in the fight against poverty, Herbig decided he wanted to do his part. His project is called Simply Haiti and he came up with a unique way to raise money.

He is asking everyone to eat nothing but rice, beans and water from February 1-5 and the money saved by doing that will be donated to his project.

On February 6, a fundraising dinner will be held at Mountlake Terrace High School. All the money raised will go toward feeding 80 people in Haiti for one year.

But in light of the earthquake that hit Haiti, his senior project has taken on a new sense of urgency.  Herbig now wants to raise even more money to help with disaster relief.

For more information on Alex's senior project and the upcoming fundraisers, visit Simply Haiti.

I appreciate these young people that have more than enough of what it takes to help make a difference in our world. Just imagine if it were you looking for food in a desparate life and death situation. Wouldn't you want an angel like this young man, even though you've never met, fighting for you. I hope everyone considers and takes this challenge Alex has put in front of you. I am going to pass the word around. He is a bringer of hope and life in a practical way of something we can do. We should be an encouragement to him and all who are working with him. Way to go Alex. We're with you.

So, because I enjoy my morning latte makes me selfish? That's ridiculous, especially because I don't make that much money. If you want to talk selfish greed - talk to the NBA/NFL superstars, CEO's of major banks and companies, oh and the executives from AIG. Ask them to all donate 5% of their wages and see how much damage that does.

With the amount of money spent on frivolous things like movies and gambling and alcohol and cigarettes latte's alone there should be no hungry or homeless people in this world. It shows the selfish greed for people's lack of concern for humanity. This young man is headed in the right direction- GOOD JOB!!
