Twelve students and one very dedicated teacher from Granite Falls High School are off to Houston to compete in the Shell Eco Marathon from April 14-17, 2011.  The Shell Eco Marathon is a worldwide competition in which participants build special cars to achieve the highest possible fuel efficiency.

"We're all racing to get the most miles per gallon. Last year we got 470 miles per gallon and this year we want to get 678 which will break the record for The Americas Prototype Diesel Vehicles," said Semira Kern, Granite Falls Eco Marathon team member.

Since September, the group has met five days a week at 6:30 a.m. in the morning to design, plan, and build the cars. The cars will be shipped to Houston next week and the teams will follow the week after that.
