Garfield High School forfeit their season opening game against Lake Washington Friday, after the head coach reportedly got upset over a call.

It happened with the score 14-0 with 10:17 left in the third quarter, the Seattle P.I. reports. After Lake Washington recovered a Garfield fumble, Garfield head coach Kelvin Goliday reportedly got upset at the call. That led to two delay of game calls against Garfield and Goliday was reportedly ejected from the game.

The referees called the game minutes later.

A fan at the game shot this video and described what was happening this way:

While attending the high school football game at Lake Washington High School versus Garfield High on 9/2/11, we witnessed an event that none of us had ever seen before in our lives.  With 10:17 to go in the 3rd quarter, a routine dive play by Garfield resulted in a fumble with Lake Washington recovering. Garfield called a time out and pulled all their players off the field.  From that point on they refused to take the field.  Lake Wash. players and referees waited on the field while delay of game penalties continued to mount.  Garfield's players simply stood in a long line on their sideline in protest.  One of Garfield's coaches walked across the field speaking forcefully to one of the referees and then walked off the field or was ejected.  After about 20+ minutes, the Garfield team left the field.

I live in Northeast pa and read this story on rivals.com I felt inspired to voice my opinion I sent the coach an email along wth the superintendant about it is very shameful. No cussing or anything.. Within minutes I get a response back from coach Goliday blasting me. This guy is head case a bit.I have since forwarded the email to this websites email tip line Good Luck out there with this cat. He needs to be removed. Howard

This coach and his staff need to GO.....They are a cancer to these young men. I personally witnessed this type of behavior last year at 2 separate times. They are an embarrassment to the coaching profession and the ones that really try to make a difference in the lives of our youth. They not only go around with this chip on their shoulder but are constantly pulling the Race card and the Under-privileged Card to the point where the police need to step up their presence at these games! WHAT A MESSAGE!! Come on Garfield AD; bow-up and do your job this is ridiculous to condone this kind of behavior just for a game!! Do you want these young men to our next mayor or council men? WHAT ARE YOU SHOWING THEM BY THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR??? SUCCESS!! I think not.... I have played D-1 football and been associated with ranked teams and something like these would NEVER be tolerated or even considered. This coach needs to hear two words....YOU"RE FIRED!!

That coach is a little crybaby. Not even Stoops would stoop this low. Sorry, coach. I don't care how bad a call is. When a call is called, that call is "right." Even if the call is "wrong" it is still "right," because all of the whining and moaning in the world won't change the call. Great message you're sending to the kids too, coach: If you don't get your way, have a little 3-year-old temper tantrum. Absolutely pathetic. The kids should have gone on the field and played anyway. Coach is a sore losers.

Sounds like someone needs to lose his job as a coach. This behavior is unexceptible from Garfields coach. He is setting the example that it is ok to play in an unsportsman like manner.

Man, if this had been our highschool, our coach sure as hell wouldn't have been the one throwing a fit like this, and if any of our players did our coach would have kicked our asses up one side of the field and down the other in practice for unsportsmanlike conduct. We were always taught to respect the referees and their calls, regardless of our personal feelings about them.

That's Garfield Sports for ya. Only good at Basketball and a joke at everything else. Garfields coach just shows you right there. I remember playing Garfield in highschool. They put all the money into the Basketball program. New uniforms and stuff like that. The baseball team, the kids were wearing different jersey tops and some kids had to wear sweats. No joke. Very sad. I feel for the kids cause they just want to play.

Who are the ADULTS here? I am going to take my ball and go home. I feel sorry for the Garfield players who wanted to finish the game. They were given a great chance to learn how to handle adversity by not giving up and quitting only to be overshadowed by their childish coach. Keep him on the bench!

Wow Coach Goliday, is THIS how you are teaching developing young men how to handle adversity?. By throwing a fit over a perceived bad call in a high school football game? By teaching your players to completely disrespect the rules and the authorities charged with officiating the game? I will not be surprised to see in a few years that some of your players will be seen on videotape throwing punches at a cop, getting arrested for assault, getting their girlfriend pregnant and then walking away from their duty, all because of the type of "Personal Responsibility" you are demonstrating at Garfield High School. What a disgrace. It is time for you to be fired.

I can appreciate getting upset over a call and voicing that discontent to the ref, but for heavens sake... this was just dumb.

Good call, Coach. You're quite the role model. This should be the LAST game you ever coach in High School football.
