OLYMPIA, Wash.  -- The search is back on for a missing Silverdale mother and her young son.

Earlier this week, Thurston County Sheriff's deputies said they were done looking for Shantina Smiley and her son, Azriel, but some new clues emerged Wednesday.

In surveillance video taken on Saturday at about 8 p.m. at the Safeway on Harrison Ave. in Olympia, Smiley appears to be getting directions. Over night, a neighbor on an adjoining rural road told authorities they heard something the night Smiley and her son disappeared.

"We heard banging on the side of the house," said Rachel Grimmer about the sounds outside her house at 1 a.m. Sunday Morning.  "It just kind of startled us because no one is ever out here, never ever see anyone out here at night."

But the incident was significant to authorities.  It happened three hours after Smiley and her son disappeared, and possibly, after the van went into the water.

"It tells us they did not wash out in Dana Passage, and this may not be water related at all," said Lt. Chris Mealy of the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.

The mother and son disappeared last weekend while on their way to Castle Rock. The only clue was their van was found partially submerged in Budd Inlet in Olympia. Police have looked at a trail of clues and a timeline, but the case has so far baffled authorities.

Authorities focused again on the nearby beach Wednesday afternoon after someone in the area recovered several items that washed up overnight. Mealy says the items include two mismatched leather shoes, a half-full and capped wine bottle, an inhaler and an orange ball.

"We're going to check with the fiancee to see if those items are related to his fiance or the child or the van," said Mealy.

But, authorities already say the wine bottle's brand, and type matches the same one Smiley is seen on surveillance video purchasing around 8pm Saturday Night.

Boy's father joins search for son

Azriel's father, Jay Carver, flew in to SeaTac Airport late Tuesday night from New York, and says he will go into the woods around Olympia, determined to find his boy.

Carver says he hasn't seen his son in years, but knows he is a good kid.

"We've been actually talking and I was going to actually try and come out and see him this summer but - well, here I am," said Carver.

Carver says he can't begin to guess what led up to Shantina and Azriel's disappearance, but he says he's determined to be the one to solve this mystery. Carver said he planned to rent a car and drive to Olympia, where his former partner and their boy were last seen Saturday night.

"All I know is I want to get into the woods and just find him and I'm going to look for him," said Carver. "I don't know what's going on with the search and everything. I heard it's been called off, but I'm going to go out there and I'm going to find him."

Fiance of missing woman shares more information

Smiley's current boyfriend and fiance said she's an alcoholic who had been under a lot of stress and relapsed last week. But he says she would never endanger the boy.

Detectives said Robb Simmons has started to share a lot more about his relationship with Shantina Smiley, but it hasn't helped them solve the mystery. On Tuesday Simmons revealed she had been under stress lately. He said he's been having health issues and fears he might have cancer. So this past week he suggested they get married.

That's when she started drinking again. But he does not think that played any role in what happened.

"The idea she would stop and drink is not a realistic thing. I do not see her doing that, I don't see herself doing that putting herself at risk, getting in trouble with the law, putting her son at risk," he said.

Detectives say they're trying to learn all they can about Smiley's emotional state and trying to determine if she had any mental or physical health problems Saturday night.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help with any information on Shantina and her son. Contact the Sheriff’s Office at 360-786-5530 or 5500.

This is a confusing report. Someone heard "banging" at their door, their didn't check it out, and the police assume it's related to the missing woman? Could it not have been an animal or a tree branch? what am I missing?

I don't understand this report. Someone heard a 'banging" at their door, but they didn't answer it, so it could have been a tree branch or an animal for all anyone knows. why do they think it was 'significant'?? Talk about Andy of Mayberry

The 21st century is no place to be raising kids. Remember to use contraceptives and/or your brain. Leave the poor kids out of this over-populated, resource sapped loony bin we call Earth.

"We heard banging on the side of the house," says Rachel Grimmer about the sounds outside her house at 1am Sunday Morning. "It just kind of startled us because no one is ever out here, never ever see anyone out here at night." So, these people didn't investigate the banging or say anything until now? I think its possible the two things could have happened. 1) It was the boy banging on the house trying to get help for his mom who probably passed out in the van and the water was rising. When no one responded he tried to go back to the van and probably ended up drowning with his mom. 2) They were together and trying to get help when no one answered at that house they probably went to the next looking for anyone to help them and they ended up knocking on the wrong person's house. I would investigate all the homes in that neighborhood where the Grimmer's live.

I wonder if she drank and passed out sitting in the car while the tide came up. He fell asleep and rising tide water woke them up. Maybe they tried to swim for shore and current took them. Or maybe the boy went for help and current took him. Maybe he left for help and came back but the current took him as he tried to go back to save his Mom. I hope none of this happened and they are safe. It's just so weird.

It's easy to get turned around in the dark. Likely she discovered she got on I-5 northbound instead of south and took the next exit - and got lost wandering around (maybe after an accident?) It's easy to do in that area. --------------------------- I wonder more about the hiker falling / jumping since she often / usually hiked with her dog and didn't take the dog on the hike she fell on.

Budd Inlet low tide was 10:37 that night. Likely they got out of the van (maybe injured?) and walked the wrong way and drowned when the tide came in - maybe stopping to rest especially if injured. Remember - it was VERY dark out. . Some of the inlets you can walk across during low tide and it's 15' during high tide

aziza, you have missed the intent of the Amber Hate system. Amber Hate is only for men. If the boy was with his father they would have used Amber Hate to promote hatred and fear of men. Since the boy was last seen and is with a female, then Amber Hate is not appropriate. A boy taken and perhaps killed by a female is not what Amber Hate is designed or intended to handle. When you understand the intent and purpose of Amber Hate you would not need to ask why it has not been used for this situation.

yogibear? It is comparing our efforts in one but not the other. Not to mention that law enforcement is tied up in a custody issued Amber Alert when the father goes to his attorney's office and they know where he is as opposed to not knowing where this mother and child are and the need to search for them.

It seems that many posters here knew what was going on. Perhaps you should tell the police so they can find this woman and her son. And the father SHOULD fly over to find HIS son. why is it so wonderful that he will fly over from New York to search for the son that he hasn't seen in years? There isn't any excuse.

kismet1947 Amber alerts are issiued when the child has been taken without pernission. This boy is with a parent. Also when they put out an amber alert it is for the vehicle that they are in. The car in this case has been recovered.

This is what happens when people watch too much CSI, soap operas, Jerry Springer, and DO NOT RESEARCH OTHER SOURCES OF INFORMATION! The fiance' doesn't have anything to do with it. If anything, you can say he's a bit on the "pay attention to me, I want my 15 minutes of fame" kick. The series of events, when collected by various sources, shows that this woman: 1) Went suspiciously off her travel route. 2) Displayed suspicious behavior at a diner and to a resident of Olympia. 3) Her vehicle found partially submerged in water, most of her MOST IMPORTANT PERSONAL stuff missing from the van. What happened was: 1) Committed suiced along with her son (murder suicide). 2) Got the "L" outta Dodge. 3) Some "outside" suspect saw a vulnerable situation and took advantage of it.

This child was living with an alcoholic mother and her latest "fiancé." That is the #1 worst situation for a child in every child abuse statistic, yet the misandrist "family" court agents of Satan in black robes of hell invariably send children to such risky and often deadly lives. If poor little Azriel had been living with his FATHER he would be alive today. The mother was obviously drunk or on drugs such as meth. At one stop she forgot her purchased food and fell down. According to a TV report, meth makes people delusional and paranoid. Alcohol makes them fall down at convenience store. The combination is deadly. She could have found I-5, its not that hard, and people gave her directions. She didn't want to find I-5. She didn't want to complete her trip while drunk and drugged. I am so sorry for poor little Azriel. He should have been living safely with his FATHER.

I totally agree. The ex-husband sounds like a solid guy with character. The boyfriend sounds like your standard everyday Creature from the Black Lagoon. Hah! Hah! Hah! Does he really have cancer? I mean, come on now... I really wonder. I'm thinking more and more that she ditched the van and ran away from that creep. Chysler minivans and Dodge Caravans need to be ditched, but this is going too far.

I don't understand why the search has been called off unless the authorities know more than they are saying... maybe this lady had some sort of mental illness or was under the influence or something... which would explain her seeming out of sorts. I pray that she and her son are found alive and safe!

Fiancé appearing more incriminating by the minute. I think he either know or maybe even is responsible for their disappearance. Of course, there's an outside chance this was all staged for purpose only the participants know. Hey, it's just a guess. Which is what most of the general public can do right now.

This whole story seems fishy to me. Too often recently the results of people gone missing is not too good. I'm glad the real dad is going to try to be looking for them. As the saying goes it seems "Something is rotten in Denmark". Remember just last week the lady who fell off the cliff and how hard it was for the father and son to find her.

If you map out the locations they were spotted with the times, it's very strange. Her first stop at 7:50 was several miles from I5, in a direction that is no way consistant to someone stopping for food or gas. The 2nd stop was close to an I5 on ramp, and in that area of olympia, it's hard not to find the freeway. The 3rd stop, nearly an hour later, was 4 or 5 miles north in the middle of nowhere. You would think that if you were lost, you would turn around when you start leaving the city and getting into the country... (I've been lost before, that's what I do). For being an alcoholic, pfft I highly doubt that alcohol would have anything to do with this. Seems like she was waiting... for what though? Just so happens that in Budd Bay inlet, on the night of Sat. March 13th, low tide was at 10:37PM. She mentioned an 'accident'. Perhaps she hit a pedistrian, got scared, called ole' fiance, and he hatched a plan to get rid of the evidence by dumping the van in the bay at low tide...

this is why soo much bad happens. The law and S&R give up the search, Family isnt out looking, well the biological dad Flew all the way from New York to look for his son. The fiance is not much help and is with holding information. People could have been out looking in the bars had they known she was an alcoholic the moment she was reported missing. what else is he hiding? The van partially submerged is really suspicious, so were her actions. buying food not taking it, ending up in different parts of olympia. DIDNT take her cellphone. her keys and her and her sons belongings still in the vehicle but no purse? None of this adds up.

Well, I don't know how her current fiance could be involved when she was seen by witnesses to have bought dinner and then leave without it; go to a home to use the phone and appear to the home owner as out of sorts. She apparently fell and hurt her knee. Sounds like being drunk to me. Yet the fiance is being mysterious also. No disrespect intended to Smiley.
