EVERETT, Wash - A man who killed four people in a drunk driving accident, including two well-loved teachers, will spend eight years in prison.
Matthew McDonald, 27, admitted he was drunk while speeding his SUV down a rural Snohomish County Road in November. McDonald ran a stop sign, smashing into the couples' vehicle on Highway 9. Brad and Melissa Agerup along with friends Thomas and Hilda Woods were killed instantly.
"We have to live with this everyday" says Debbie Howell, the Woods' daughter. Howell and her sister, Cynthia, stopped to lay flowers at the scene of the crash, before attending the sentencing. "Our parents didn't get a second chance."
Before the sentence was delivered, the Agerup family also faced McDonald for the first time. Brad and Melissa Agerup left behind two teenage daughters.
"Thanks to you, my life is turned upside down" said 16-year-old Kaitlyn Agerup. "I won't have a family to walk me down the aisle or help me get ready for prom."
Brad Agerup had been a longtime athletic trainer and teacher at Mariner High School in Everett.
Snohomish County Superior Court Judge David Kurtz stopped short of the maximum sentence of eight and a half years, saying McDonald submitted a prompt guilty plea and appeared remorseful. McDonald is also required to submit a plan to become an advocate against drunk driving upon release from prison.
"This sentence is the best we can do" says Debbie Howell. "It still won't bring my parents back."
McDonald will serve eight total years because all four prison terms will be served at once.
Before the accident, McDonald had a clean record.
