Cornwell is a best-selling crime writer, best known for the series featuring Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a medical examiner.
The recently released book is the 20th in the series and features a pre-historic twist.
The author draws on her experience as a newspaper crime reporter, work in a medical examiner's office, and time volunteering with a police department.
Cornwell's has sold more than 100 million copies of her books.
