TACOMA, Wash. - A Grinch stole thousands of dollars worth of electronics and presents from beneath the Christmas tree at a Tacoma home Sunday morning.

"It's a shame," said homeowner Cindy Kerrigan, "That there's people out there that can do that to a person's holiday."

Kerrigan told Tacoma detectives someone broke into her home Sunday between 1:30 and 9 a.m. She and her husband hosted a Christmas party Saturday night and told police they forgot to lock the backdoor of their home near South 92nd Avenue and Yakima Avenue. Kerrigan said the burl gars came in while she and her husband were asleep.

The Kerrigans have seven grandchildren. Several of the stolen gifts were meant for the family. The thieves also took video cameras, a Wii video game and a guitar that had sentimental value for Kerrigan.

"It was my ex-husband's who passed away a few years ago," said Kerrigan.

Tacoma police spokesperson Mark Fulghum said the city has not seen an increase in burglaries over the holidays, but he said when burglars hit homes this time of year, gifts are commonly taken.

To all who have graciously given thoughts of prayer and sorrow for this misfortune, I thank you. I am the daughter of the Kerrigans and the pure audacity that some individuals have in thinking that this could be in any way an attempt for sympathy or to gain profit during this season is pure hypicritical. I firmly believe that the person who is usually pointing the finger towards someone is usually guilty of it themselves. I am proud to be part of my family as we gather together the strength to come forward and relay such an unfortunate event to the public in the attempt to bring justice to all who are affected by cowards who sneak in the night and steal. All be it, the door was left unlocked and luckily no one was hurt, but if no ever spoke up about these incidents, the public, our community, and our children would never know that people can sink to such low levels.

Thank you, machinehead and ondskap, for your defense. There have been very touching offers to help us replace the gifts that were stolen but we have not accepted any, not will we. This is not what the interview was supposed to be about. The intention was to warn others to be especially diligent about securing their homes this time of year. We are usually adamant about locking our doors and are fairly sure that the thieves live near us, new we had a party that night, (which is not illegal) and went on the deck searching for leftover alcohol and discovered the door. Our cars were parked out of sight to make room for guests and we believe that the intruders didn't think we were home. We were fortunate that no one was hurt and the thought of what could have happened, makes sleeping difficult now. Unfortunately, that part of the interview did not make the news. Also important is to sleep with your doors open. I enjoy sleeping to the sound of a rain sound machine but no more.

cagecx1 - you have no idea what a family goes through in this experience - i can only hope that God humbles your heart to be more caring and understanding. My house was burglarized on Thursday 12/17 and the crooks stole my t.v. in the living room that was mounted to a stand, my t.v. in my room, all my kids gifts who are 8/12 their playstation 3 and all the games, their wii system and all the games and my sons laptop and other misc items. They popped the lock on my back door. When people report these things it's not for a pity party - it is in hopes that they catch the s.o.b's that did this. In the future i suggest you keep you idiotic, poor spirited opinions to yourself because you clearly are not one for helping another!!! For the general public - the Police are lying to news crews about these attacks and burglarys - they are happening BIG TIME i was told by the attending officer that they are getting calls left and right and most of these are forced entry! Be as careful as you can!

@cagecx1 (a.k.a. Arrogant Moron) These folks are the mother and step-dad of a good friend of mine, so I know that your speculation about this being a scam to get people to feel sorry for them and get more gifts is a figment of your very limited and pitiful imagination. I'll speculate based on your commentary (not just one, but two comments), and the nature of the comments, that your life is filled with cynicism and I feel sorry for you, really. On another note, it is pathetic when spiteful people like you (in the Christmas Season no less) come right out and blame the victim for their misfortune. I bet you're the type of person who while kicking someone while they are down looks contemptuously over at them while wagging your self-righteous finger, and haughtily proclaims that, "You shouldn't keep nice stuff in your house if you don't want it stolen." Real nice... Hope you get a lump of radioactive coal in your stocking this year, loser.

This family should be thanking GOD for sparing their lives, instead of worrying about some gifts. This outcome could have been far worse. I hope they learned a very valuable lesson here, NEVER EVER LEAVE YOUR DOOR UNLOCKED. They must have been drunk from the party. I sure hope they don't have kids because they put everyone's life in danger.

A crime like this is no doubt related, in some way, to drugs. If we are to make Spokane County a safe place to live and raise families we must do something. An easy way to help is to contact your legislature and let them know that cuts in helping get people off drugs is making the public susceptible to such crimes. For every $1 we spend now on getting people off drugs we save taxpayers $7-10 later in police work, courts, jail, emergency rooms, etc. This is a documented fact. Go to http://apps.leg.wa.gov/districtfinder/ and send an email it really is easy to do.

You shouldn't leave your door unlocked, period. This isn't the sixties anymore. It's sad the "burl gars" got in, but it sounds like someone knew they had good stuff AND the door was unlocked. No one goes around randomly trying back doors in the hopes one will be open.

What in the HELL is wrong with that family?? Who leaves their door unlocked anywhere, let alone Tacoma? The husband and wife both so happened to remember that they left it unlocked. Maybe is was one of the guests!! Sounds like a scam to get people to feel sorry for them and get more gifts.

Criminals need a little more to think about here in Washington. It's time for a good Castle Domain law in our State.
