A woman died Tuesday morning in an apartment fire in Bremerton.

It happened in the Madrona Estates in the 4900 block of Auto Center Way. The call came in at 10:07 a.m.

Just after 10 a.m. something started a fire in a downstairs unit. It quickly spread upstairs.

"I looked out there and I noticed it was my friend's apartment on fire,” said Bambi Vincent.

Vincent said she and other neighbors tried to help the woman out of her burning apartment, but the flames were too hot.

"There was no possibility... it was engulfed so intensely... there was just no way," said neighbor Marsha McCullough.

A woman described by firefighters as "elderly" did not make it out of the downstairs apartment.

"She was a really nice lady... she'll be missed,” said McCullough.

"It was just horrendous. I couldn't believe it,” said Vincent. “I was so hurt and disappointed on Christmas Eve."

The Red Cross kept the 20-plus evacuated residents warm and fed while investigators looked into what caused the fire that gutted two units and damaged several in the immediate area.
Some people may not be let back home in time to celebrate Christmas. Neighbors were distraught to hear of the death of their neighbor.

"I tried to save her,” said a tearful Marsha McCullough.

Bremerton Fire Chief Al Duke said arson has been ruled out as the cause of deadly Bremerton fire.

He said it would likely be determined to be an accident.
