BOTHELL, Wash. -- Police have arrested the husband of a Bothell woman who was found murdered earlier this year.
Susann Smith was bludgeoned and stabbed to death in her Bothell home in February. On Thursday, police took Smith's estranged husband, Alan Smith, into custody. He was not arrested for her death, but for obstruction of justice for not surrendering his passport, which is a misdemeanor. Once considered a person of interest in the death investigation, police now call him a suspect.
"He doesn't have his passport," his girlfriend Love Thai said in front of the Bothell home. "His attorney has it."
Thai says she's been with Smith since they met last month and fell in love.
"The truth is he loves his wife. He's grieving over both his wife and his children. His children were taken away four months ago," said Thai.
Police say the Smith's son and daughter were placed into state's custody after their mother's murder.
Court documents obtained by KING 5 show that the day after Smith was reported missing, her estranged husband was searching online for flights to Venezuela and for information on whether that country opposes extradition. Lab technicians also found traces of blood on his SUV's steering wheel, center console and floor mat, and records show he had purchased disposable coveralls, shoe covers and a rubber mallet prior to the murder.
Police planned to book Alan Smith in the Snohomish County Jail Thursday evening. KING 5 News has learned authorities planned to take his footprint and compare it to footprints found at the scene of the crime.
Police say Smith's estranged husband has moved into the home since her death, and officers have been called to the residence four times in one month. Last Monday, neighbors called 911, saying they heard a woman scream at the residence. When police arrived, they looked behind a hedge and found a couple having sex. It was Smith's estranged husband and his new girlfriend.
"He's had a girl naked over in the backyard, along with him behind (the hedge) naked," said a neighbor.
Neighbors question Smith's estranged husband's behavior in the wake of her death. The couple was in the middle of divorce proceedings and a bitter custody dispute at the time of her death.
Police say the case is an active and open investigation, but won't discuss the evidence they have.
Editor's note: KING previously reported Susann Smith's ex-husband was arrested; he was her estranged husband.
