BELLEVUE - On Monday, Boeing took the wraps off its new three dimensional technology that creates dynamic pictures that look like art, but serve a serious business purpose.

Right now, Boeing is testing the 3D technology on the 747 line in its Everett plant.  Small low-powered lasers are emitted from a rotating scanner pushed around on a cart making thousands of measurements.

The scanner can then calculate with a high degree of accuracy exactly where everything is in a plant, every beam, every wll even where the airplane is sitting.

That kind of accuracy could allow the use of more robotics, but the techhnology could also find applications on spacecraft where measurements in docking spaceships are critical.
