Boating season is well underway but the waterways are going to get even busier as the Fourth of July weekend approaches, making boating safety top of mind.  New regulations require all boat drivers aged 35 and under to take a Boater Safety Education Course and obtain the certificate before driving a boat this summer. The program is being phased in a will move ahead according to the following schedule:

Phase-in schedule
    2011 - Under 36 years of age
    2012 - Under 41 years of age
    2013 - Under 51 years of age
    2014 - Under 60 years of age
After 2014 - All boat operators born after 12/31/1954

To ensure safety on the boat, there are certain precautions that every person on the water should take.

"The most important thing is that people wear their PFD's (personal flotation device) and make sure that everyone on the boat has one that fits them.  Never drink and boat. It's just a like driving a car and would be a very bad idea. As well, know the rules of the road, be familiar with how you encounter other boats and what you are supposed to do" said George Harris, President of the Northwest Marine Trade Association.

All children, 12 and under, are required by law to wear a life-jacket on a moving boat 19 feet or smaller.
