Too many adults are forgoing bike helmets

For Lisa Hoffman, strapping on a bike helmet is old hat. That's why she's still alive.

"A rollerblader cut me off while biking. I braked really quick. I flipped over my bike," she said.

Lisa's head hit the ground hard.

"I noticed my bike helmet cracked. And at that moment, that's when I realized this helmet saved my life."

Today, she's is known as the "helmet crusader."

Whether you ride on the main streets, or like to hit the back roads, helmets are an essential accessory. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, wearing one can reduce the risk of injury by up to 85 percent. Still, 91 percent of the cyclists killed in 2008 were not wearing helmets, the majority of them adults.

"Wearing a bicycle helmet is the single most important thing that you can do to determine whether or not you live or die from a bicycle accident, " according to Dr. Melissa Barton. She says as we age we need to be even more careful since our brains begin to shrink as young as age 30.

"The space between the skull and the brain gets larger. And that empty space has very tiny blood vessels, so riding a bike without a helmet and hitting your head, can cause those little tiny blood vessels to tear."

When cyclist Jeff Kaplan tumbled onto train tracks as a young adult, he wasn't wearing a helmet. Thankfully, he only needed stitches.

"Before I had my accident, I absolutely never wore a bike helmet. I just didn't think they looked good. I thought they were inhibiting."

Style is just one of the reasons adults tend to skip the headgear.

"They didn't wear one as a child, and so they really don't see the need for it," said Randy Swart of the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute.

Dr. Barton says her patients also blame cost. The good news? Many helmets today are as little as $10 and studies show they're just as effective as the expensive models.

Fit is also important. Not only should your helmet be level, it should touch all the way around.

"We call it snug," said Swart.

A bike helmet should last at least five years. If you crash, throw it out and get a new one. Also, be mindful of the sun. It can make a helmet shell brittle, meaning you should replace it sooner.

bricsa09 - I do agree with you on principle. Voiding health care policies for those who do not wear helmets sounds great - but then you will have health care being voided if you get cancer, if you do this or that (IE: skydive / hang glide / etc) and the insurance companies will have loop holes for everything and will deny coverage. Again, it does sound like a great idea but once you let insurance companies have loop holes for denying coverage, there will be no coverage in spite of how much you pay.

um. the article is why you should wear a helmet. Honestly, it's extremely stupid to forego a helmet if at all possible. The article doesn't discuss the legality at all. You people are hilariously paranoid about "the nanny state".

I usually just wear an European-style biking cap. It's much more stylish and my head cools better.

These Bicyclists who refuse to wear helmets are typical of that community. The laws of motorists just don't apply to them, they need to wear them the same as I,a motorcycle rider do.They also need to follow traffic laws.

Been riding a bike since i was very young, and do not need a helmet. Nor do i care if you think i do. If there is a large group of riders, and that organization wants to require a helmet, that is their choice. We certainly don't need laws on adults riding bicycles. It is just another way of moving our state from "the evergreen state" to "lets do whatever the large insurance companies want state". I would like to set off fireworks, legally again, also.

Not wearing a helmet should void health care policy coverage. I resent paying for coverage for the foolish. The same goes for those riding motorcycles. They should also be 100% financially liable if they're not wearing a helmet. One could apply that for those not wearing seatbelts as well.

I always wear a helmet whether riding bikes or horses. It's foolish not to. That said - I believe adults should be able to make the decision to wear a helmet or not - whether riding bikes, horses, motorcycles. It's their choice / their decision. They know the risks and accept the responsibility. I do support the laws for kids wearing helmets - they should not suffer the consequences from their parents beliefs oNor should children be lawsuit bait for irresponsible opportunistic parents.
