Act of kindness leads to heartbreak

REDMOND, Wash. - A Bellevue grandmother wanted to help a Northwest charity, so she donated boxes of clothing and shoes she no longer needed. But that act of kindness led to heartbreak when she realized she'd accidentally given away her most precious jewelry.

It was 1942 when Gladys Bergstrom of Bellevue married her husband Marvin. World War II was raging so there was no fancy wedding.

But on their 40th anniversary, Marvin surprised her with a ring laden with diamonds - more than one and a half carats worth.

"It’s the only ring I have from him," said Bergstrom.

After 67 years of marriage, Marvin died last year and Bergstrom worried about someone stealing that ring and eight others she’d received over the years from friends and family. So she hid them.

"I always heard not to put them in the refrigerator and not to put them in your salt shaker, or sugar or flour canisters because they’d empty them,” she said. "So I thought I’d be smart and put them in a shoe."

But last week Bergstrom made a big mistake when she put her charitable donations out on the front porch for collection. She mistakenly included her white Easy Spirit shoes containing the precious rings she’d tried so hard to protect.

"I looked through the whole closet, couldn’t find them, so I knew then they had gone," she said.

Bergstrom said it was "a terrible feeling."

"I thought I was stupid," she said.

Bergstrom and her daughter drove straight to Value Village in Redmond where her donations had ended up.
Some of her shoes were there, but not the Easy Spirits.

Value Village sorts trough 800 shoes a day. Some wind up on shelves, others go into recycling. They never found the shoes Bergstrom was looking for.

Joan Allred, Value Village manager, told KING 5 News she feels bad for Bergstrom and had her staff search the sales floor and back warehouse where donations are sorted.

"We’re doing the best we can, really hope we find them," said Allred.

Bergstrom says she isn’t one to cry over lost possessions, but she hopes if someone finds her rings, they’ll show the same charity she did when she accidentally donated them.

"They mean so much to me," she said. "If they were your rings, you’d want them back."

The family is offering a $1,000 reward for the return of the lost jewelry.

My first instinct is the person that has Gladys Bergstrom's jewelry is an employee at Value Village in Redmond. It's probably the one they least expect. I even expect the woman from Value Village suspects someone, or is the person; considering her uneasiness in the interview. I hope they get someone that can investigate. Get the other shoes of Gladys off the shelves and see if they can check the writing on the price tags and find out who priced them. If Bergy's shoe was sold fast, and it is not a popular brand, someone in the inside is a culprit and possibly has an accomplice that was called to come and buy the shoes. And, someone does know where they were placed on the shelf. Here's my input. Hope you find her jewelry.

If she get her ring back, she needs to pop Pulp Fiction into her player and seek to the scene with Christopher Walken... I guarantee she won't loose it again!

This is such a sad story. I hope someone is kind and returns these gifts to their rightful owner. I worked for a couple different stores of this company and I can tell you, the sorting process moves quickly. If the shoes were in bad condition, they are in recycle. If the person in the Shoe department that prices things, didn't check the shoes, they went directly to the shelf. I don't know about you, but I try on my shoes.... so that means the jewelry could be anywhere. I hate to be grim about the outcome, but I have seen this with my own two eyes. I have myself bought thrift store garments and found things of value in the pockets. Nothing of this value, but things I am sure someone missed at some point, like a $5 bill in the pocket of a purse... So, hopefully the person that came in contact is good and kind.

So, would any of you trust tresjbenet? Would you have this person in your home or around your children? Would you be a friend?...........No, I guess not. Perhaps that's tresjbenet's problem. Alone and friendless, but able to change. Hopefully he/she will repent and find Peace.

tresjbenet, you are a pathetic looser. I hope something this tragic happens to you this year... I hope you experience the fret, pain, loss and frustration that this nice lady has had to suffer. I hope you rot. It is "people" like you that make the rest of us look bad, If you actually qualify as a "person." I am ashamed to even live in the same state as you. I hope you rot in H@!! To the nice lady, missing her jewelry, I am sorry... this has actually happened to me. I put away my great grandmother's 4 carat sapphire ring, so as not to loose it or have it stolen. It was passed down to me. I left that small box accidentally in a house I moved out of, it was never recovered or returned to me. I hope that someone has a heart and comes forward and returns your jewelry. Bless you and good luck!

Wow, pixelater. Do you work at that V.V.? Were you the one who found the rings and pawned them?

My guess is that tresjbenet has no feelings, works for Value Village and has all ready pawned the rings.

I have to join others in tresjbenet bashing. You are one ignorant basturd. I want to see you get old and get lost and forget who you are, because it won't matter to anyone, given your attitude. Poor woman just forgot about the rings; it could happen to anyone. I feel sorry about her and I hope someone will bring it back, though in modern society it will be a miracle.

tresjbenet - Are you a cold hearted snake or what? When people get older, they begin to forget things... It's a part of life. Growing older we all lose "the edge" that we had in our younger days. My grandmother was always sharp as a whip, but as time went on, she started to forget things, which was totally not like her. I hope that someone will return her jewelry, since it's the right thing to do. I have two 14K gold men's rings with 2 Karats of white diamonds in each, and I would be totally sick if I lost them somehow. What if you lost a very expensive diamond ring because you were not paying attention? How would you feel?

tresjbenet...thanks for sharing. Such a warm and loving heart that you have displayed. May you never get elderly or make an error in judgement. Why do some people become so cold, uncaring and calloused? If she were your mother, I wonder what the reaction would be. Think!
