A 91-year-old man is in the hospital and a 52-year-old woman who lived with him is behind bars, being held for investigation of attempted second degree homicide.
It happened at the Woodcrest Estates in Bothell, a community for residents that are 55 years of age or older.
Neighbors knew something was wrong when police showed up on their usually quiet street on Tuesday.
"They kept asking if I heard anything," said neighbor Janet Krieger.
She says the investigation has police tape surrounding the home of her 91-year-old neighbor, John Staeber, who she says is battling cancer and in recent months, rarely left his home.
Police arrested a 52-year-old woman who lives with him. They say she assaulted the elderly man on Tuesday morning and then waited more than two hours to call 911. Staeber was taken to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Krieger and several other neighbors told KING 5 the woman was supposed to be taking care of Staeber. Now, they are hoping and praying their neighbor pulls through.
"Every time he had the opportunity, he'd say, if there's anything you need, give me a call," said Krieger.
Bothell Police will not say what prompted the attack or what weapon the suspect might've used to hurt the elderly victim. They spent two days processing evidence at the scene. Detectives are also still working to determine the exact relationship between the woman and Staeber.
At last check, Staeber was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center.
